Tip Calculator
Enter the bill and a tip percentage and this calculator shows the tip, the total, and — when you split it — what each person pays. A $54 bill at 20% adds a $10.80 tip for a $64.80 total; split three ways that's $21.60 each. Common percentages are one tap away, and the per-person figures round to the cent.
The formula
Multiply the bill by the tip rate as a decimal to get the tip, add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the headcount for each person's share.
How to use it
- 1
Enter the bill
Type the pre-tip amount from the check. Tax is usually left in the bill — tip on the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer, by entering that figure instead.
- 2
Choose a tip percentage
Pick a common rate like
15,18, or20%, or type your own. The tip and total update instantly. - 3
Split the bill
Enter how many people are sharing and the calculator divides the total — and the tip — evenly per person.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a standard tip percentage?
- In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 20% common for good service. Counter and takeout tips are usually lower or optional.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
- Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common. Enter whichever amount you want to tip on as the bill.
- How does the split handle uneven cents?
- Each share is rounded to the nearest cent, so the per-person figures may differ by a penny from the exact total when it doesn't divide evenly.
