Hours Calculator
Enter when you clocked in, when you clocked out, and any unpaid break; this hours calculator returns time worked both as a decimal (for payroll) and as hours and minutes. Clock in at 9:00, out at 17:30, take a 30-minute lunch and it shows 8.0 hours. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically.
The formula
Convert both times to minutes since midnight, subtract, take away the unpaid break, then divide by 60 for decimal hours. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, add 24 hours for an overnight shift.
How to use it
- 1

Read decimal and HH:MM
The result shows decimal hours for timesheets and an
Hh Mmfigure for quick reading. It never goes negative.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I handle an overnight shift?
- Just enter the times — a clock-out earlier than the clock-in is read as the next day, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM correctly returns 8 hours.
- Why does payroll use decimal hours?
- Pay is rate × decimal hours, so 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5. Minutes are divided by 60 — 15 minutes is 0.25, 45 minutes is 0.75.
- Does it subtract paid breaks?
- No. Only the unpaid break you enter is removed. Leave paid rest breaks out of the break field so they stay in your total.
