Enter your current grade, the percentage of your overall mark the final exam is worth, and the grade you want; this calculator returns the exact score you need on that final. It solves required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, and tells you when a target is already locked in or out of reach.

The formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Your current grade covers the non-final portion (1 − weight). Subtract that contribution from your target, then divide by the final's weight to get the score the exam must deliver.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Enter your current grade

Use the percentage you have going into the final — the figure on your gradebook before the exam is counted.

  2. 2

    Enter the final's weight

Type how much of your overall grade the final is worth, e.g. 20% or 30%. This is the single most important input.

  3. 3

Enter your target and read the answer

Set the grade you're aiming for. The result is the exact exam score required — and flags it if that score is above 100 (not reachable) or negative (already secured).

Frequently asked questions

What if the needed score is over 100?
It means your target isn't reachable with this final alone — the exam can't make up the gap. Lower your target or check for extra-credit options.
What if the result is negative?
A negative number means you've already secured your target grade; even a zero on the final keeps you at or above your goal.
Where do I find the final's weight?
Your syllabus lists it as a percentage of the course grade. If the final is one of several equally weighted exams, divide 100 by the number of graded components.
