It solves required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, and tells you when a target is already locked in or out of reach.
The formula
Your current grade covers the non-final portion (1 − weight). Subtract that contribution from your target, then divide by the final's weight to get the score the exam must deliver.

Frequently asked questions
- What if the needed score is over 100?
- It means your target isn't reachable with this final alone — the exam can't make up the gap. Lower your target or check for extra-credit options.
- What if the result is negative?
- A negative number means you've already secured your target grade; even a zero on the final keeps you at or above your goal.
- Where do I find the final's weight?
- Your syllabus lists it as a percentage of the course grade. If the final is one of several equally weighted exams, divide 100 by the number of graded components.
